Have you heard of the famous hymn “Blessed Assurance” written by Fanny Crosby? For generations, it has been a beloved hymn by many, not just for the rich Theology in the lyrics, but also because of the tremendous testimony of the hymn writer.

Fanny Crosby was a blind hymn-writer who composed over 9,000 hymns. Due to an eye infection and a mistake by a doctor, Fanny went blind when she was just six weeks old. She never saw her blindness as a handicap, however; she saw it as a way to bring God glory. One day, her good friend, author, and musician, Phoebe Palmer, had written a tune and asked Fanny what she thought the words should be. After spending several moments in prayer, Fanny knew just what they were. It was then that the hymn “Blessed Assurance” was born. The first line of this hymn is, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” If we stop there and meditate on the words, the question begs, “Is Jesus yours?"

The Bible says in 1 John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” God says in His Word that we may know that we have eternal life. As we enter this new year, there are so many things that we could fear. But we don’t have to enter in the year alone. When you place your faith in Christ alone to save you from your sins, you may know that you have eternal life; and you will have nothing more to fear. Friend, is Jesus yours? If not, will you make Him yours today?
